Aero-tee Makes "History of Firsts"

From the Boston Globe, July 3, 2008

“Golfers would probably applaud the contribution of Dr. Venanzio Cardarelli of Plymouth, inventor of the Aero-Tee golf tee. The polycarbonate tee - its tooth shape is fitting, given that Cardarelli is a dentist - allows air to pass under the ball, improving accuracy, distance, and loft, he says. Cardarelli came up with idea "just by making observations," he said. He watched the flight of the ball off wooden tees, studied golfers' abilities to maintain consistent swings with the ball at various heights, and took a number of anatomic and physical observations into consideration. Cardarelli's tee - perhaps the most significant innovation since the tee was created in 1899 by another Boston-area dentist, George F. Grant - has been approved for professional use by the United States Golf Association. Cardarelli says he will release the next wave of Aero-Tees, made with of an even more durable material, this summer.”

Plymouth, MA based Aero-tee Rated #1 in Golf Lab Results.

Objective and Rigorous Test Reveals New Tee Technology.

DATELINE:PLYMOUTH, MA

Think you need to invest in another new golf club to better your game? Not necessarily.Recent test results of Aero-tee, a new golf tee made in America’s hometown of Plymouth, MA allows for a better, straighter and longer drive, giving golfers a new, unexpected advantage.

Aero-tee, the polycarbonate, tooth-shaped golf tee, designed by Dr. Venanzio Cardarelli, a South Shore dentist, has proven to perform better than the wooden or other plastic tees when tested by Golf Laboratories, Inc. of California.

Mechanical test results have proven Aero-tee to be the best in overall performance, exceeding the standard wooden tee and it’s plastic tee competitors in distance, loft, accuracy and roll.

Aero-dynamically designed to allow an airstream under the ball when compared to conventional tees, the patented Aero-tee is unique.Aero-tee’s attributes also include: three point minimal contact to minimize resistance; tri-fluted design for better ground penetration and stability; side notches to serve as reference points for measurable placement adjustments; and a stem length which allows for individual ball height preferences.

Dr. Venanzio Cardarelli, the Aero-tee’s designer, joins the ranks of other dentists who have made an impact on golf tee history. In 1899, the original golf tee was designed by a Boston dentist, Dr. George Franklin Grant, and the one currently used, was patented in 1924, by a New Jersey based dentist, Dr. William Lowell. Dr. Cardarelli designed the Aero-tee to work well with conventional sized and over-sized driver heads.

According to Dr. Joseph Santelli, Dr. Cardarelli’s partner and long-time friend, “Aero-tee earned its place as an important piece of equipment to improve a golfer’s game. There are fewer advantages in using a wooden tee aside from its lower price – but why limit your performance over pocket change when the Aero-tee mechanically proves to add distance, accuracy and loft? The standard wooded tee only serves as a platform, but does not improve your game. Rather than investing in golf equipment such as the latest $400 club, it’s much more effective to opt for the innovative Aero-tee.”

The Aero-tee ‘conforms to USGA rules’ and is available for purchase online at www.Aero-tee.com.

PGA Show Appearance

U.S. Wins “Hands Down” over Foreign Manufacturers

Premier Golf Tee, Aero-tee, Made in America’s Hometown of Plymouth, MA

While lower cost is often the reason for a number of U.S. companies to outsource their manufacturing to foreign countries, the Plymouth, Mass., based manufacturer Pixley Richards, won “hands down” when it came to producing a superior polycarbonate golf tee. As the founders of Aero-tee, the polycarbonate, tooth-shaped golf tee have discovered, “Made in the U.S.A.” products are worth every cent.

The proof? Recent test results of the Aero-tee, a new golf tee made in America’s hometown of Plymouth, rated Aero-tee number one as it outperformed wooden and other plastic tees when tested by Golf Laboratories, Inc. of California.

Aero-tee’s advanced performance is not only due to the tee’s aerodynamic design, but the materials used and quality of manufacturing. In order to meet durability and performance specifications, the Aero-tee is made from polycarbonate. The use of a material such as polycarbonate is more expensive, but ensures that the Aero-tee will not break or shatter with normal use. Recyclable polycarbonate also produces less waste and unlike wooden tees, saves trees.

Although the use of polycarbonate was specifically requested of overseas manufacturers, they continued to use low-standard plastics for the tees, which resulted in breakage during use.

“Sourcing a foreign manufacturer who would specifically use polycarbonate material was near impossible. We tried to work with manufacturers in China and Manila, insisting on polycarbonate, but something must have been lost in translation because the product was just inferior. In addition, there isn’t any quality control over there. We had the molds shipped back from China and turned to Pixley Richards in Plymouth and never looked back,” explained Dr. Joseph Santelli, Vice President of Aero-tee. “Although the cost to produce Aero-tee in the U.S. is higher than foreign manufacturers, there simply isn’t a better quality and the additional investment ensures a sturdy, reliable product.”

Pixley Richards has achieved the distinction of being QS9000 and ISO9002 registered.

Since 1965, Pixley Richards, Inc. has become a leader in the manufacturing of precision plastic components. In addition to two other facilities located in Wyoming, Michigan and Dieuze, France, Pixley Richards’ Plymouth, Mass. facility is located at 9 Collins Avenue in Plymouth Industrial Park. Dentists Sink Teeth into Golf Tees

Duo hopes to market redesigned product

Plymouth – The game of golf has seen many changes throughout the years, but one piece of equipment has managed to stay the same, until now.
Dr. Joseph Santelli and Dr. Venanzio Cardarelli, both dentists who practice on the South Shore, have tinkered with one of the most important parts of the golf game. The tee.
“We said no one thinks of the tee as major golf equipment,” said Santelli, who lives in Duxbury and practices dentistry in Plymouth. “It really hasn’t changed at all. I’m a big golfer, and I’ve never seen anything different. We’ve dramatically redesigned the golf tee. It’s really unique.”
And when it comes to the evolution of the golf tee, it turns out to be quite interesting that both Santelli and Cardarelli are dentists.
The original golf tee was designed in 1899 by Dr. George Franklin Grant, a prominent Boston dentist. Ten years later, Dr. William Lowell, a dentist out of New Jersey, perfected Grant’s design.
Santelli and Cardarelli can’t figure out the correlation between dentistry and golf tees. “It’s about as far removed from dentistry, other than the fact that most dentists like to play golf,” Santelli said.
Santelli’s and Cardarelli’s new tee is called the Aero-tee™. It’s made of a polycarbonate material, ironically resembling a large, white, pointy tooth with its tri-fluted stem. There are ridges on the tee to aid in placement.
“No matter who we show it to they’re kind of like ‘wow, that’s neat,’ ”Santelli said. We just think we have a pretty unique design. It’s a little larger than a regular golf tee. There are little notches on the stem so you can kind of feel how you’re putting it into the ground. We tried to address all issues.”
The dentistry duo hopes others will share their sentiment. They’re going to show off the Aero-tee™ at the 50th Annual PGA Merchandising Show in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 23 – 26.
The show, held in Orange County Convention Center, will feature 12 miles of exhibitors.
“It’s an uphill battle because we’re going to put a fee on something that’s a giveaway item right now,” Santelli said. “I know golfers, and when they want an advantage, they go out and buy a $400 club.” Now Santelli said, they’re going to be spending some money on golf tees for the first time.
“We hope the tee offers some improvement to golfers,” said Cardarelli, who lives in Plymouth and practices in Braintree. “We feel it’s time for a change and the timing is right.”
And timing is always right to introduce new equipment that might aid a golfer’s game.
“It should allow golfers to hit the ball straighter,” Santelli said. “If you get five to 10 yards out of your drive, it’s going to be an advantage.”
MasterTee™, the company Santelli and Cardarelli formed to launch Aero-tee™, will be giving out free samples from Feb 1 to Feb 15. e-mail lynne@aero-tee.com for more information.

MasterTee™ Company, founded by Venanzio Cardarelli and Joseph Santelli, two dentists that have been friends since 1980, started developing their three-pronged Aero-tee™ in (Month) of (year). They debuted the unique product with their third partner, Vince Mauriello, in January of 2003 at the PGA Merchandising Show.

MasterTee™ Co knew from the beginning that positioning a new tee against the old wooden standard wouldn’t be easy – but the unexpected test results made it even harder.

The original material on the initial run of Aero-tee™ samples handed out at the Orlando PGA Merchandising Show for the product launch proved to lack the durability the tee boasts. MasterTee™ is proud to announce that after intensive research, the new tees are ready to go the distance, thanks to a manufacturing contact from the PGA Show and all the people who voiced their opinions through the aero-tee website.

The tees can be purchased at Golf Etc., on Long Pond Road in Plymouth. For further information about the Aero-tee, please visit www.aero-tee.com.

Toothy Golf Tee Will Let You Paste The Ball

Dentists unveil a toothy golf tee

They’re not making any promises, but two dentists with drive believe their tooth-shaped golf tee may just improve your game.

Dr. Venanzio Cardarelli, inventor of the new three-pronged plastic tee – the prongs even resemble a tooth’s roots – says the importance of this small piece of equipment should not be overlooked.

“Nobody has ever given the tee any kind of special attention”’ says Cardarelli, who lives in Plymouth and practices in Braintree. “I thought maybe it was time ….”

Although innovations in golf ball and golf club technology constantly flood the market, the wooden tee has remained relatively consistent since its debut in 1922.

Cardarelli and his business partner, dentist Joseph Santelli, showed off the new Aero-tee™ at a recent PGA merchandise show in Orlando, Fla. The strangely shaped tee drew quite a bit of interest, according to the dentists.

“The majority of people who came by our booth looked at it and said, “This looks like a tooth,” said Cardarelli. Not surprising, give the history of this integral piece of sporting equipment.

The pair are following a long tradition of golf tee design by dentists.

The first tee was invented by Boston dentist George F. Grant in 1899. In 1922, dentist William Lowell introduced a cone-shaped wooden tee with a small concave top that became the world’s first commercially produced golf tee.

Santelli and Cardarelli theorize that the link between dentists and golf tees may be due to the fact that dentists tend to play a lot of golf and are accustomed to manipulating small objects.

“Dentists, I think, are very unique individuals,” says Cardarelli. “They can look at things and be creative with the smallest things.”

Cardarelli, who patented the new tee design in 2000, also holds several patents for dental equipment.

“He looks at something and says, if you did this and this, it would be better,” says Santelli, who lives in Duxbury and practices in Plymouth.

The Aero-tee™’s thee pronged design minimizes contact between the ball and the tee, reducing the resistance that has to be overcome when the club strikes the ball, the dentists say.

“The air is able to flow under the ball giving the ball lift as it goes off the tee,” Santelli said.

Santelli said the tee is being tested to see how it will affect golfer’s play.

“We think people will get longer drives and hit a little straighter,” he said.

The tee’s stem has notches to aid in achieving a consistent height each time the tee is placed in the ground.

Both dentists golf and occasionally play together, though Santelli, who has a 14 handicap, hits the links much more often than Cardarelli.

The United States Golf Association recently approved Aero-tee™ for professional use, according to Richard Rugge, the director of the USGA’s technical division.

Rugge said the USGA receives about a dozen new tees each year. Most offer only small variations on the traditional tee.

There are only a few rules governing approval, Rugge said. Tees cannot be made so that any part of the tee is between the ball and the club, and they cannot have any special aiming devices.

The dentists are offering free samples of their tee from their golf office, at 139 Court Street, Plymouth. More information about the tee can be found at their website, www.aero-tee.com.

Aero-tee™ Keeps Greens Clean

with its new Recycling Rewards Program

When Golf course owners showed concern about Aero-tee™’s bio-degradability and possible damage to their expensive maintenance equipment, the MasterTee™ Company heard them loud and clear.

The MasterTee™ Team determined that if the golfers are planning to pick up their durable Aero-tee™ anyway, why not put it back in their pocket and get it off the tee box? Not only did the idea keep course owners happy, it opened up a new opportunity. The decision was made to collect used Aero-tee™s and to send out product related rewards for user incentive. Collecting Aero-tee™s also gives The MasterTee™ Company the chance to monitor quality control.

MasterTee™ quickly discovered that plastic is not so easy to get rid of properly. Most vendors wanted 10,000 pounds minimum – that’s a lot of Golf tees to collect! After weeks of phone calls, looking for endless hours on the web, anyone who sounded remotely interested ended up responding with ‘its not enough material for us to process’, if they responded at all!

Steve Kakes, from Conigliaro Industries in Framingham, took the time to call back during his down time from a local convention. Conigliaro Industries operates an 88,000 sq foot material recovery plant and since 1990, has been leading the industry creating recycling solutions. With their corporate goal towards Zero Waste, Steve said he would gladly take both the rejected and returned tees and reuse them into one of his many products, even though the quantity fell way below their minimums. Their unwillingness to say no to the question “Can it be recycled?” gave Master Tee renewed faith in environmental consciousness here in Massachusetts. Conigliaro’s award winning efforts have led to over 50,000,000 pounds of material, amounting to over 10,000 trailer trucks full of recycled materials that have been converted to PolyCorn recycled packing materials and Plas-crete wall blocks that are used for retaining walls and erosion control.

The environmentally friendly Keep Greens Clean Recycling Rewards Program is due to launch officially by the middle of June and has been well received by most of the people who have seen the plan. MasterTee™ Company knows that participation is always the key – and they are hoping that fellow golfers’ quiet appreciation for the beauty of the great outdoors will be enough incentive to help Keep Greens Clean wherever our Aero-tee goes.

Please visit our website at www.aero-tee.com to sign up for the program or to learn more about the Aero-tee. You can also visit www.conigliaro.com for more information about their products and services.
